How to Make A Consistent, Healthy Income Writing Hubs At HubPages
87In the last eighteen months I have received a number of emails from hubbers asking me questions like “how much money do you make”, “how much money can I make,” “how long will it be before I make money” and “how can I increase traffic to my hubs”? If you are interested in making money writing articles at HubPages or you are a hubber who would like to make more money then this hub is for you.
(Updated 12/18/2011) There are several ways to make money at HubPages which include the HubPages Earning Program, Google AdSense, Amazon and Ebay. My earnings have been a combination of the first three with the majority coming from the HubPages earning program in the last couple of months.
There have been many articles on the internet as well as hubs published at HubPages about how to make money writing articles online. I have had the opportunity to read many of these articles and hubs. Some of them have great ideas. Others have not so great ideas and others have ideas which will get you in trouble with the search engines. It is important to test everything you read by learning what methods of search engine promotion are acceptable. Read the quality guidelines section on the Google webmaster page for details.
To become a successful hubber takes time and a concentrated effort. It took me about a year before I made my first check over one hundred dollars. Like any venture, the hubber seeking to make money as a HubPage author should have a two to five year plan. This is the amount of time needed to make most business ventures profitable. Have a goal to publish at least one hundred, original, high quality, targeted hubs per year. The more high quality hubs, the greater the income potential.
Evergreen Content
In order to potentially make a long term income from each hub, quality content alone is not enough. Evergreen content is necessary. If you are committed to writing long term and to producing evergreen, quality hubs, how many hubs could you write in 5 years? How about 10 years? Imagine being the author of more than 1000 hubs. Some of the best HubPages authors have well over 1000 hubs and were able to accomplish this in less than 5 years.
The most important component that makes a hub successful is quality content. Quality content give the consumer the information needed to make an intelligent buying decision. Providing quality content requires research even if you are an expert in your field. Research should be collected from a minimum of three qualified sources in order to provide accurate material.
Part of quality content is being able to write effectively. If this is not a strength you possess consider taking a writing course at your local community college. Personally, I focus all my energy on quality content. I have never promoted my hubs through one way link building or at relevant forums and blogging sites.
A successful HubPage author is one who creates hubs with original, targeted, quality content which meets the needs of the consumer. How is this accomplished? The best way to reach your target audience is to have the title of your hub match as many words as possible that consumers are typing into the search engines. Using the Google keyword tool can give you helpful suggestions but these suggestions should not be used as your title if you want to receive the maximum amount of traffic possible.
Typing keywords into a search engine search box will bring up a list of popular keyword phrases which will also help to put together an effective title. After using these tools to give you ideas for an appropriate title put yourself in the shoes of the consumer and try to imagine what he or she would type into the search engine box. Don't be afraid of long titles.
Long titles allow you to include more key words and target a greater number of consumers. HubPages recently incorporated a highly effective tool called title tuner into each hubs stats keyword page. This tool can be used several days to several weeks after your hub has been published to add keywords that consumers are using in their search but are not found in your title. It can also be used to improve older hub titles. Just go to your "my account" page and click on the title tuner beta link. It will bring up a list of all hubs that are missing keywords in the title that are being used by the consumer. All of these hub titles can be fixed quickly and easily on this page.
The most interesting aspect of making money at HubPages is that money earned is like residual income. Once you have written a large number of hubs you accumulate income without doing any work to produce the income. The only work you do is creating new hubs and updating existing hubs. Update (2/29/12) - Updating existing sites (for HubPage authors updating older hubs) in Google's eyes is a huge part of providing quality content. They have recently introduced a freshness algorithm which gives higher ranking to sites with fresh content.
Providing quality content will compel many quality sites to link to your hub over time. There is nothing wrong with promoting your hub at relevant blogging sites but I would rather use the time to create more quality content. I believe this is quickest way to increase long-term earning potential.
HubPages has a feature on the stats hub metrics page that allows hubbers to know if they have many or few incoming links using a one to five star system. One star meaning few links and five stars meaning many links. Many of my older hubs as well as some of my newer hubs have five stars without any form of promotion.
One to Five Stars for Incoming Links
Niche writing is another effective way to increase traffic to your hubs which will increase income. Some of the top hubbers at HubPages often write within their field of expertise and become known by consumers as an expert in that field which keeps bringing them back for more.
If you are in hurry to make lots of money in the next few months, HubPages isn't the right place for you. If you consider yourself an author who plans to be around for a long time, and you are willing to work hard and smart, your earning potential will be great and eventually all your hard work will pay off.

up & beautiful! well written, informative and concise. Thanks for all the helpful info...
Thanks for the info about the title tuner, stevemark122000. I wasn't aware of this tool. I always learn something new from you!
Good overview of the "Big Picture." Always happy to read on this subject.
Great article. Came at a great time and really helped me clarify the way forward for some plans I am making at the moment.
Steve, you always do a great job on your articles. I'm sure most of your followers have a great respect for your writing ability. I wish I had more time to research and write but with six kids, homeschooling, sports activities and working a full time job, I write when I can. Keep up the good work!
Useful. You have clearly told the newbies that writing an article today and expecting a paycheck tomorrow is not going to help. Patience is the key to success.
I can't believe after all this time I had never spotted that stats button at the top of a hub. I looked for this a few times but always looked in the my account menu. Just goes to show you live and learn. Thanks for the info.
Better telling you this when I am signed in as well.
Great helpful, and quite insightful hub for newbies :)
This is a very helpful list of ideas, still have a lot to learn and memorize the evergreen idea. I usually just write whatever comes to mind without any research.
Thanks for the great info!
Steve - Good advice written nicely into a fine article.
Gus :-)))
Excellent hub as always. Very good information. Thanks for sharing.
Stevemark, thank you for introducing me to the idea of "evergreen content". Seems like commonsense now that it's been pointed out, but I wasn't focusing on that before. Good article!
great advice! It will certainly help new hubbers who aren't quite sure about subject matter and optimized titles. Rate up/useful!
Very helpful information. Thank you for these tips.
This is a fantastic hub and well presented. You have obviously mastered that!
Do you have anything for those of us , not interested in making money here, but rather, "practicing" and honing our craft, building our confidence as writers? That audience may be smaller ( or maybe not), but I would read hubs geared to that.
This is awesome, useful best hub I read I did know to earn money you need time and a lot's of effort! But what I love about this HubaPages is that you can actually write everything what's on your mind! Learn in the same time and pass your knowledge to others! Find grate people and write great hubs!!!
Thanks stevemark122000
This is about the best guidelines I've seen that make sense to me; one who doesn't want to spend time on the niche strategy. This is great to know/hear steve and sure encourages me to do what I like best, writing quality hubs. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you Steve for you information to make money writing hubs. You are right we have to be patient and those big buildings were not done over a night but they took long time to be done. Thank you for sharing again.
Very informative hub. Yes I am here at Hubpages for 7 months now and will make my first payout cheque of €100 this month.
It does take work and patience to earn money writing online at Hubpages, but do you know what! I love writing and to be able to earn money online from my articles is a fantastic bonus.
Hey Stevemark! Thanks for the follow. Great article!
I loved reading this as a newbie, it is extremely helpful and thank you for the follow. I too am from Southern California prior to moving to North Carolina.
Great pointers! Thank you!
I'm so glad I read this informative hub. It confirmed what my instincts have been telling me- to keep writing about topics I'm passionate about for the pure joy of sharing my knowledge and experiences and the hope that others will find my hubs useful and touching. In the 2 weeks since joining Hub Pages I have been amazed by how supportive other hubbers are and by how much I enjoy and learn from reading their hubs.
I have just started writing in Hubpages. Thanks for your well researched information. I like it and will try to use it.

Greetings Steve,
I enjoyed reading this hub, and found it informative and insightful for me, a new hubber! It is a pleasure to read your writings and thank you for being so honest and blunt! It sure worked for a newbie like me.
Blessings,
Laurie
Great information. I am still learning how to use the Hub. It takes me awhile, but I'm getting there.
I hate to ask a dumb question, but where are these "Hub Metrics"? Are they gone or am I just being blind?
A nice and useful article for newbie hubbers like myself! Much appreciated!
Very informative article, thanks for posting it. :))
Thanks for sharing this, you've just made my day more interesting. I like, this hub, for it's rich content.
Wow. This was a really informative Hub. Should be required reading if you are planning to stick with writing and would like to earn a bit, too. Imagine, 1000 hubs. Hadn't thought about such quantity. Definitely doable over time. I like your writing.
i will follow procedures, i will take instructions from people like you. i like your commendations, i am a new hubber and i will improve over time. thanks for your advice
Nice Hub! Thanks for writing !
Than you for sharing this great information, I appreciated it.
Thank you for sharing these great ideas. As a new writer on hub pages it is important to understand the mechanisms available to us.
Your hub was a GREAT read, thank you so much for sharing, really appreciated!
You've given me some realistic parameters for my goals. That's a little better than feeling like I need to just write until I start to see some kind of result. Thanks.
I appreciate your honesty. You give simple insight to what can be accomplished within the Hubpages platform.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I am a new Hubber, and haven't yet developed a knowledge base for online writing. I look forward to reading more of your work. Voted Up and Useful.
This hub was a great shot in the arm! I've wrestled for years with the idea that I had to be another Steinbeck or Lawrence. HP has helped me find my own voice and the response I've gotten has told me, I may not be everyone's cup of tea, but there are those who like "my voice." Thanks for the encouragement.
A well thought out and concise introduction, to the requirements of writing quality content, and the half dozen other things that have to work to make hubs appealing.
I made $0.04 in my first month and I jumped for joy. It's not about the money, It was just nice to see it I guess.
I just love writing and it's great to get the feedback from our peers.
Voted up.
Steve - thank you very much for writing this. You have a very helpful hub here and I appreciate the work and the thoughts you have shared. Bookmarking as a continued reference and as a source of inspiration.
Best wishes on your continued success

Hi Steve
i have no words to express my gratitude to you for helping me put regarding few things! you're right it takes time and patience to earn money especially at hubpages and i sure will embrace both!
thanks alot for sharing such a usefullll hub which i am bookmarking.
You know, when I first joined Hubpages, I was sort of expecting to start earning money right away.. I didnt and this made me want to give up writing here, however, I didnt stop because I just love to write. Reading this HUb made me see that I am in the right path towards earning big.
Since I joined, I have made a considerable amount of money. Even though I am not quite where I would love to be, I am slowly getting there. This Hub was very informative! Thank you!
I've not caught on to back-linking and some of the other promotional tools with which many people find much success. It's heartening to learn that hubbers such as yourself are able to make money without the use of these tools. Quality content is king.
i haven't been earning that much, up to no a few cents here...yet i still look forward to earn that elusive dollar...lol...my first since my earning is on peso...yet, nothing can compensate the joy of having found true people here...so earning is just a bonus for this is a great training ground especially for newbies...
This was very helpful. Thanks!
This is a great hub for beginning hubbers. Thanks for the detailed overview.
Very helpful hub. I have resolved to work hard and stay here. It takes time and hard work to succeed in anything one does. Thanks for such useful tips.
Very useful and helpful information. It seems that just like anything else in life, we have to pay our dues on Hubpages through time in order to be successful. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for sharing this. I've read many Hubs and articles similar to this subject matter, but I have to say yours was easy to follow and very well-written.
You provide useful information so readers can make an informed decision. To me, that speaks volumes.
Great article!
Glad to read this and I always appreciate your Hubs. I noticed early on that you wrote lots of health articles. Are there topics you feel earn more than others? I've written lots of articles on small business -- quality, too -- but I'm not earning like I believe I should -- even $50 or $60 per month. I do know that small business is a highly competitive niche. However, I'm surprised I'm not earning like I think I should be. Any input from readers is appreciated.
beautifully explained and quite infomative for a new hubber like me.
Steve, thanks so much for taking time with your reply. Wow, you're talking 10 word titles? Yes, many of my business Hubs have a high dollar amt for the clicks.
I'm going to change some of my titles as you suggested. I do use the Adwords keyword tool from time to time. But I probably should use it more. Thanks, again, Steve.
Excellent clear advice and motivation. I'm going to check out the keyword tool again. Thanks. Voted up and useful!
"..It took me about a year before I made my first check over one hundred dollars.." What you said here is highly appreciated and I hope all the readers make note of this. The unfortunate part of writing online to make money is that there are many so-called experts out there who promise the world and a lot more to new comers. But we all know that HubPages, and other forms of writing online require time, effort and a lot of patience.

I appreciate the useful information. I am new at using Hubs pages and this give me hope. Thanks, Voted up.
Thanks for the information. I am a newbie myself and love to write. I'm doing this because it's mines. With kids and a home to take care of I feel at times I need something for myself and always loved to write.
Hi! I'm brand spankin' new here, and have written exactly ONE whole hub! lol I am coming from another site where i have written close to 100 articles, but, it has come time to move on and hopefully - up! I was on their hot content list constantly and in 6 months became one of their top writers. I went from zero views (seriously...for weeks..lol) to close to 900 yesterday - and for that site - that's a ton! The thought of moving here (or anywhere) was almost overwhelming, but, i'm what might be called in some circles a 'stubborn bitch' lol..I have just a couple technical questions. Where best to ask them? Thanks for the informative article!
Thank You!
Great hub, I look forward to the day when I am actually making money from my hubs. I appreciate your suggestions.
This is a great Hub! I love the rich information from it! I am about to celebrate my first year on Hubpages, and I am going to follow a lot of tips to continue making money on HP. Thank you for writing this!
Thank you for sharing the information. I've just got started on hubpages and found this hub very educative. I will definitely put to use your great tips.
Thanks for the "freshness algorithm" - I didn't know that and am planning to add new content to several of my articles. Thanks! Informative and voted up!

I'm new here and have made $2 so far. The first magazine article I got published paid $50, though there are no residuals. On the other hand, I had to do days of research for that one.
