Is Coffee Healthy? Health Impact Of Caffeine, Decaf, Organic and Organic Decaf Coffee
74Coffee has emerged to be the most popular beverage in North America and the entire world. Most people enjoy the taste of regular coffee and find that a dose of coffee with naturally occurring caffeine in the morning is a great way to kick start mental alertness and energy. Unfortunately, caffeine is an addictive drug and many through overuse have become caffeine sensitive, and have experienced unhealthy side effects such as the jitters and insomnia. Habitual coffee drinkers also find that the stimulating effect of caffeine doesn’t last long. Soon an energy crash occurs and more coffee is needed to get going again.
Replacing breakfast with a cup of coffee in attempt to boost energy and lose weight will have the opposite effect. Caffeine is a stimulant. Real energy comes from a healthy diet. Missing breakfast in the morning will rob the body of needed calories required for energy and cause it to hold onto stored fat making it even more difficult to lose weight.
Recent research has found that caffeine in soda pop causes rises in blood pressure. However, this evidence has not yet been found with coffee, which may be due to the presence of several healthy compounds counterbalancing the effects of caffeine.
Drinking too much caffeinated coffee isn’t healthy, but in moderation research suggests it may be good for you. Studies show that antioxidants and other nutrients found in coffee may work with caffeine to promote good health and protect against a number of diseases including cancer and diabetes.
Although coffee contains health promoting nutrients it should never be used as a substitute for fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes which contain a wide range of vitamins, minerals and fiber that all work together to promote good health.
Coffee lovers who can not tolerate any amount of caffeine, usually turn to decaffeinated coffee. Research shows that decaffeinated coffee has the same health benefits as regular coffee but many are concerned about the decaffeination process involving the use of synthetic chemicals known to be harmful to health. The chemicals are used before the roasting process and evaporate during heating. The health concern involves the unknown impact of trace amounts of chemicals that remain in the coffee.
For the health conscious individual trying to avoid caffeine and decaffeinating chemicals, organic decaffeinated coffee may be the way to go. A natural decaffeinating process known as the swiss water process is used. An all natural process where only heated water is used to separate caffeine from the coffee bean. Tests show that this process removes 99 percent of the caffeine. Another benefit to choosing organic coffee is the absence of pesticides and genetically modified organisms used in conventional farming.
People who do not suffer from moderate amounts of caffeine but are concerned about toxins in regular coffee may want to consider organic coffee. This option will be preferable to the coffee lover who is primarily concerned with taste and flavor. Decaffeinated organic coffee may lose some of the taste and flavor in the separation process.
People who suffer from heartburn or acid reflux disease may need to avoid coffee. All types of coffee tend to relax muscles that prevent acid from rising into the throat causing the condition to worsen.

Good news to read this. I love my coffee in the morning which is about 4 cups. Great hub, very informative.
Just the word "coffee" caught my eye since I love it. Thanks for this informative article.
Thank you so much for this wonderful news! You've made my day! Or should I say 'life'. I really need at least 5 cups of coffee per day. Pure coffee.
I love to have my coffee. I never use it to substitute for anything. I drink on average 3 cups and continue to enjoy that.
Thanks for the informative hub!
Do love the aroma of coffee;I'm a tea drinker myself, but occasionally enjoy a white coffee, good to know that if taken in moderation it has health benefits:)Thanks
Great hub as usual,stevemark122000! Love coffee - in moderation of course, and never as a replacement for my fresh veggie juice!
Hi stevemark - I like my one cup of hot coffee a day. Those of us with elevated blood pressure should keep it at that. Rated your article UP and USEFUL, Thanks
Gus :-)))
I love my coffe in the morning, that is my little comfort zone. I drink decaf, the caffienated gives me the jitters. Nice hub!!
Great info on coffee. I am a coffee drinker. Love it the morning and it is a real treat to have a cup in the late afternoon. Never thought of it as a replacement for fruit or food of any kind.
Hmm, I wonder why I don't like coffee. Maybe I should learn how to like it and drink it, even at my age?
Another great hub Steve, I used to be one of those addicted idiots...about 35 years ago...I drank it all day long....since then, just a cup or 2 in the morning, with breakfast...and that's it. Needless to say, am a much better person for it...it also makes you horribly irritable...loved the graph...thanks, take really good care!
Coffee, great catalyst, great "waker-upper. Like anything else, can be abused...
great article about coffee. I think it's interesting that when caffeine in pop affects blood pressure but in coffee it doesn't.
Good article. Informative. Did you know that coffee in the morning without breakfast can cause pseudo hypoglycemia? It is quite scary if you don't know what is happening. Causes a rapid drop in your blood sugar, jitters, dizziness, weakness, light headedness and if food or something sweet is not taken when the symptoms start, you can pass out. I found this out the hard way. Had all kinds of tests done, and discovered the coffee to be the cause. Now after i have my morning cups of coffee i make sure i drink orange juice, and take a super B complex pill. Counters it well.
Love my coffee - its definitely part of my morning routine. I really am not much of a tea drinker, though! Great overview of the impacts of various types of coffee. Cheers!
look at all the comment activity, wonder if there are a lot of us coffee addicts roaming the net..
Coffee, coffee, it's great to have a morning cup of joe. Every morning I would either have a cup of tea or coffee and both are caffeinated. :)
I just read something recently that said it helps your heart. I hope it was done in moderation.
I couldn't do without my 2 cups a day, so I am very happy to see that it has health benefits in moderation. The graphic you provided showing the health benefits & tradeoffs with each cup of coffee was very informative. Thanks!
Rate up and useful.Your hub and the comments from your readers seem to indicate that I may need to talk to my doctor about my coffee drinking. I have high blood pressure and take a med for it to keep it at a normal range. My docs have never mentioned coffee and cola restrictions.I have one cup in the morning, and occasionally one in mid afternoon.
I drink at least six cups a day...having cut back from sixteen in my youth. I drink half-calf...wonder what that does to the body? Hmm...will have to try the organic stuff I guess. :) thanks for this info on coffee, which is my most beloved drink of choice. :)
I love a cup of coffee in morning and find it does pep me up. However the supermarkets near me in Fort Pierce, FL do not carry organic instant coffee. In New York it is easy to find. There is a big taste difference between organic coffee and regular instant coffee.
One cup is enough for me during the day, more than one makes me feel a little jittery.
Great hub! I found it very useful to; coffee isn´t just coffee! But I guess I will continue to have my coffee in the morning and in the afternoon!
i love coffee. it is my dessert and i am trying to cut down the caffeine, apparently i had no idea about how decaf coffee is made! super useful info!
Coffee causes irregular heart beat for me even though i drink coffee once.
Interesting. I read that filter coffee is healthier since is has less cholesterol. I also read my french press coffee isn't so good! Thanks
