The Truth about Bio Oil
Bio oil claims to be able to treat acne and remove acne scars. It contains a number of beneficial plant based oils and nutrients, but these beneficial ingredients are in a base of Paraffinum Liquidum, which is another name for mineral oil. Mineral oil is a petro-chemical derivative and is harmful to the skin. Putting mineral oil on your skin is like wrapping it in plastic wrap. The skin is not able to absorb nutrients and it can't detoxify, which renders the beneficial ingredients ineffective and results in premature aging.
Several other unpronounceable ingredients in Bio oil are known allergens and respiratory, skin and eye irritants. It also contains BHT, which may cause cancer, reproductive defects, and is harmful if swallowed. Customer reviews have been mixed. Some said the product improved their acne and some said it irritated there skin and made their acne worse.
The best way to treat acne and acne scars is with an effective all-natural formulation. Salicylic acid, a registered ingredient with the FDA for the prevention and treatment of acne. It is the ideal choice for acne. It is a BHA, or a beta hydroxy acid. Not only will this kill bacteria, but it will break down accumulated dead skin cells that clog the pores and create long term acne.
The best way to use salicylic acid is in an incapsulated form. This ensures that it is going to be beneficial to the skin underneath the surface. So you are not only treating the skin from the surface, you’re going into the pores and you’re able to treat it much further down in the stratum corneum.
To receive the maximum benefits to the skin, salicylic acid should be used in a formulation. Ingredients used will have been proven over time to help with irritation, bacteria, and inflamation. Topically, vitamin A (formula should contain vitamin A from beta carotene to avoid toxic levels of vitamin A) is great as an antioxidant.
It helps to protect and nourish cells. Internally vitamin A is wonderful because it helps with the sebum production. Zinc is an excellent anti-microbial both internally and externally. It also has powerful healing properties. There have been several scientific studies done on zinc applied externally and how it improves wound healing time.
Products to be taken together internally: Alfalfa, licorice, and mulberry, all have anti-inflammatory properties. They’ve been used for centuries to help with inflammation. L-lysine helps with skin eruptions, such as cold sores, acne blemishes and other eruptions on the skin. Scientific studies have shown that when L-lysine is taken orally it really can help with different types of blemishes skin problems. Yellow dock, burdock, and sarsaparilla have been used for centuries to help with different skin conditions, especially acne. They really help to balance the body internally.
Any natural formulation is going to take a while to work because building up the body's defense mechanisms takes time. So generally four to six weeks, six to eight weeks, that’s when most people start to see results. Of course some people may see them sooner, some may see them a little bit later, but that’s generally how long it’s going to take before you’ll see results. Although it takes longer, it is more effective and will give you long term results.
There has been a lot of scientific studies done on chocolate, caffeine and greasy foods. These types of foods really don't cause acne. What can cause acne is alleries to certain foods. For instance, many people are sensitive to dairy products. You need to know your body, and you need to listen to your body. And if you break out when you eat these types of foods, obviously you’re sensitive to these foods. And these types of foods can cause acne. But the typical greasy meals, the high caffeine, the chocolate, these types of food are not going to cause acne.
It is tempting to go for a quick, short term solution when experiencing acne. Solving a problem with methods that only create more problems should never be an option. The skin irritation and health risks make many of today's products like Bio oil undesirable. The best way to deal with acne is with natural products that deliver healthy, long term results with no negative side effects. This is best accomplished by giving the skin natural products that will help the body build its natural defences so it can heal itself.

Great hub, Steve. I've also heard bad things about mineral oil so never used anything which is made from it.
Thanks for all that info! Bio Oil sounds very much like baby oil. Don't leading brands of baby oil contain mineral oil? I've always been appalled at how they could be so callous!
Thanks for your comments everyone!
Shalini Kagal, you're right! Baby oil is 100% mineral oil and should not be put on babies.
In India, it comes doctor-recommended in most cases! Am I glad I didn't use anything but natural cold-pressed oils for my daughter!
I appreciate the research you’ve done. Great hub. You are right the quick and easy way seldom if ever works yet that is the way most take. Thanks ~ eddie
Would of been nice to give us a suggestion to replace the Bio Oil for the effects of dehydration scars, acne etc....
Thanks for your comment santeleah. You're right! I should have put a link for a better alternative. I have written a hub on the subject with a great alternative treatment. I will add it to this hub. http://hubpages.com/hub/Arbonne-or-Proactive-for-A
I never knew this. Thanx from now on will use only bio oil. These hubs have really helped me learn so much.
Thanks for the info. My daughter has wanted to try Bio Oil for a scar and I've been skeptical of it because of all the mineral oil.
I started using Bio on on my scars after surgery and found that when I started using the contents of vitamin E capsules instead there was a great improvement.Do you know whether this can be damaging in any way?
I had an opportunity to talk with some tribals few months ago and learnt how rich their knowledge is about the natural medication. Though they could not explain me bio oil in the modern terminology that you have done here in this hub but I then was highly impressed and now I am highly obliged to you for helping me understand their simple talks and discovering how much important it is to prefer bio oil than mineral ones. Regards.
EXCELLENT INFO !! GO ON
cool, ill have to give that a try, i've also been skepticle in the past but its always worth a try!
Mineral oil is nasty stuff, and I wish more folks were aware of that -- we've got way too many health/beauty products that use it. I'm glad you created this hub and hope more people will get the message. One thing I would add is that skin is the largest organ of the human body, and it usually reflects how healthy we are. Eating well, getting exercise and fresh air, and taking multi-vitamins (because no one has a perfect diet) can go a long way toward improving how our skin looks.
interesting hub! I use cocoa butter and shea butter, which I think are better for the skin.
Great hub. I sure could have used this a few years ago when I was experiencing adult acne.
Great hub. There are so many things out there sold as "herbal products", and they do not need to be FDA approved. So anything that is sold as herbal, or bio, or any other safe name- should be used carefully or avoided.
Very interesting hub. My fiance got through quite a lot of it whilst pregnant, hoping to avoid stretch marks. It didn't work!
Interesting article
Well written hub. I have been seeing this product advertise alot lately and have been considering it since they make it sound so good. But then ads always make things sound better than they truly are.
thanks for teh information. I never had the idea that it is no good to use.
Thanks for the information. I agree with your conclusion that the best way to deal with acne is with natural products that deliver healthy, long term result with no negative side effects
I Love treating the body with natural products, this hub is great. I did not know that mineral oil is harmful. Thank you for the information.
Sincerely,
Whikat
Thanks for the info. They seem to rate it so high in the market. I even recommend it to people because its been hyped so much. P/s help us investigate more beauty products :)
Had ACL repair on my knee in April. Incision healed very well. Decided to try bio oil on it to see if the scar would diminish. After about a week of applying it a small hole appeared in my incision and started leaking a clear yellow fluid. Stopped using the product immediately. The pin hole has increased to 1x2 inch. The area is extremely itchy and when scratched it oozes more fluid. Other pinholes have appeared elsewhere on both legs, arms and stomach. They ooze the same clear fluid, scab over, scab comes off and the oozing starts all over again. I saw my doctor and told her that the only thing different that I did to my incision was to try bio oil. She asked what the ingredients were? A good product - I am questioning it. Anyone out there experience this problem?
Great Hub, Steve! I completely agree with you. Neem could be another effective herb to consider for acne and overall detoxification. But people with low blood sugar level and pregnant women should stay away from this herb.
I have acne scars and been getting more. Would bio oil help prevent them from coming? With all the bad write up on it, i think i will avoid it. Is salicylic acid a prescrption?
Thanks for your comment marie!
Salicylic acid is the way to go. You do not need a prescription. You can learn more by reading my article on Arbonne Clear Advantage at http://hubpages.com/hub/Arbonne-or-Proactive-for-A
I live in the south and get eaten up by mosquitoes. They leave horrible red scars on my feet and legs. I've used Bio Oil for over a year now, and, truthfully, it has helped the scars go away faster. After reading this, I think I'll try to find another way to get rid of scars. Any suggestions on a product (not anything having to do with acne as my scars are not caused by acne) that could help?
BIO_OIL is useless before i post this message i had been using bio-oil for more than 3 months but i didn't see any changes so is a waste of money.
Wow! I thought bio oil was good... Thanks for the info. What about shea butter for scar?
Thanks for such great info as usual.
what's the chemical formula for mineral oil?
Hi, when I was at school years and years and years and.. well you get the point!, I was given sulphur and salycilic acid cream to get rid of my acne. I did'nt think it would work as my skin was appalling. But within couple of weeks, it was clear and spot free. So my point is I totally agree with you. cheers nell
Thanks guys
Bio Oil is a popular hit in Southern Africa especially Namibia where its incredible hot. Personaly bio oil worked for me as I been using it on my face for uneven skin tone. The only problem is, I suspect is affecting my eye but thanks for the infor and I will bin it straight away. thanks
Thankyou so much for this infomation, I was just about to buy some to help with acne and scars, I now will be looking at other products
I haven't tried it myself but I'm going to buy soon. Thanks for the info. Good Job!!!
I have been using Bio Oil for two years now :(
Would have been nice if I had read this post before....no wonder I have been breaking out and God knows what other harm I have done to my skin. Thanks for the informative post!
I see more people saying it worked than those saying it didn't. I read an interesting article about it here http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2425998/b . I guess it's not for everybody!
After reading about the info about Bio oil. Am scared, i will love to use the oil but do you think it will glow my skin
interesting info. love it! i learned a lot and appreciate the education.
best,
dr. sam lam
Thank you for the powerful and informative article. My daughter was looking into Bio oil and other acne cures, but will take your recommendation instead. The all-natural route is usually the better way.
Hi..i have acne and i have just started using Bio-oil (for the past week or so)..i have MANY scars on my face from having chicken pox as a toddler. Do you have a suggestion as to what I could use for ACNE (and) SCARS instead of Bio-oil???
Sometimes the most simple and inexpensive products are the best. I lean towards natural remedies, myself.
My daugther has strech marks on her waist and she's only 15 what can we use to clear up or lighting them or remove them. I would like for her to have more confidence in herself but she will not wear certain clothes for that reason. Help
I am nearly seven months pregnant and have been using
bio oil for about two months, hoping to avoid stretch marks.
So far I have developed none, by luck or genetics I am unsure.
But after reading these posts I am concerned wether or not I
should I not be using this product after all?
Hi Malinda, I am new to the hub and read your post. I don't know about the oil but I had a child at age 19 and another at age29 Both times I used a lotion with cocoa butter I never got any stretch marks on my stomach at all, a few on my hips and thighs, not bad and verry little on my chest, This worked for me I still use it and am 56 now also Cocoa butter lotion if you can find with vitamin E WE used to open VE capsul and put on skin (a little sticky but helped too)now can get in lotions . I buy at $ store or most any drug store or other store of your choice should have some brand in stock. Hope this helped Have a Good day !!
I just purchased Bio Oil today. I haven't even opened up the package yet. I am bringing it back to the store for a refund. After reading the posts, I am not putting that anywhere near my face. Thank you for all the information. I'm glad I read this.
i was considering trying this product for my scars as the airbonne did not work at all and proactive burned my face. are there any other products to work on acne scars? thanks.
I have a lot of scaring, plus stretch marks, and after seeing the adverts for bio oil i tried it for about six months. No change! It was expensive as well as useless. Thanks for your hub, just wish I'd seen it earlier! :)
I have developed a reaction of red spots around my eyes which looks disgusting. Wasn't sure whether it was a reaction to Flax seed Oil or the Bio Oil. Chemist told me it would be the Bio Oil. Came home to research Bio Oil and wow I don't know why I didn't find out how harmful this product actually is any earlier. Now I'm just going to try using Olive Oil.
Thanks for letting people know about Bio-Oil and Mineral
oil. Believe it or not I was just looking through a magazine and was reading the ad on Bio-Oil and was saying to my self, I have to buy myself a bottle. Then the ad stated to learn more about the product go to their
Web Site. Wow is unbelievable what people would sell to make a dollar. I guess peoples life is worth one penny. Thanks again and keep up the good work. Its good to know someone out there cares.
The basic rule of thumb is to never put anything oil in your face. It will clog and cause zits to break out.
I WAS GOING TO BUY BIO OIL, BUT AFTER I READ YOUR INFO ABOUT THE PRODUCT I AM VERY SKEPTICAL ABOUT USING THIS PRODUCT. ALSO THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO TOLD THE TRUTH ON THIS WEBSITE ABOUT BIO OIL. THAT ALSO HELPS A PERSON DECISION. THANKS
I HAVE MOSQUITO SCAR ON MY LEG.I RUB SOME BIO-OIL ON MY LEG BUT IT DOESN NOT WORK WHY DOES IT HAPPEN
I had used a half bottle of bio oil but did not see any benefit. i was planning to buy the uk brand i was told is a better quality before reading this article. thanks a lot for this truth.
i use bio oil and it worked clear up some scars of mine, and of my friends. my friends were actually the one's who recommended bio oil to me. i however have not seen any significant change in my acne scars though, so thanks for the information!!
Excellent article & info. When my children were born, Baby Oil was "it". Of course I learned later the problems with mineral oil - being a petroleum product, it's not good for one's body. But even more dangerous for my second child was that she was - still is, though now a granny herself - severely allergic to lanolin, which Baby Oil contained (now it probably doesn't since those of us who want lanolin can hardly find any!) But, again - B.O. was recommended and no one thought to consider whether or not the ingredients were compatible with baby's skin! The poor baby was one mass of rash which required treating several times a day with a sulphur ointment till we found out the cause of the rash. Luckily, she was an even-tempered baby. (Perhaps all that lanolin, mineral oil & sulphur accummulated and caused some later anger issues! - LOL.)
I was planning to buy Bio-oil.Thanks for the information.
ahh thankyou for that..and i was sooo craving it cus it works wonders for me.okay so what can be used on the body instead of bio-oil?
Chi, you can find out by reading another hub I wrote:
wah! thanks so much,i did not know its that harmful i was jaz about to start using it.
Hi, I had my mole removed and having wounds which are pinkish in colour/white. I wanted2 try bio oil but nw duno wat2 do...can u suggest me what can i apply to speed up the healing process...im taking alot of fruits which has Vit C.
prathabini, Manuka active honey is known for it's ability to increase wound healing time.
Hi.Please I need help fast.I recently started having acne and spots from acne scars.I have bought and tried everything:oil of olay and neutrogena facial wash,Facial scrubs, numerous face cleansers and yet still no hope in sight.I just bought the BIO OIL and now you say it's no good?Pls,what can I use for my skin problems?
Staci, just click on the link above at the end of the article called Arbonne Clear Advantage or Proactiv for acne. This hub will answer your question.
what do you use for stretch marks that are already on your body?
Wow--thank you Steve, I have been using bio oil, and actually liked it, but now I have second thoughts! Things that seem beneficial, aren't always!
One herb I like for my skin is "Gotu Kola", what do you think about this? It also seems to improve my memory, which at 53 is helpful!
Thanks for this insightful hub!
i haven't really seen much of a difference on any of my scars, i have a huge scar from stitches on the back of my thigh i was hoping to have fade out. It also didn't lessen any of my acne scars, i don't have very severe ones to begin with but i probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone. In my experience Jan Marini products have cleared up my skin completely in the past, they are salicylic based product. Anyway was looking for a new product but after learning my lesson and reading these posts i will have to go back to spending 80 bux a bottle for the good stuff. oh well at least it gives me the results i like
I've been using bio oil for about 2 and a half months now it's only faded the scars that were hardly seen.. the major scars are still shown
Suggesting that Bio Oil 'may' cause cancer (or at least one of it's ingredients 'might') is a little irresponsible. So does breathing smoggy air. It's all relative isn't it? You would have to literally soak in tubs of the stuff for months on end or ingest large quantities of it, neither of which is likely in a topical use ointment/oil. You've got about as much chance of getting cancer from Bio oil as you do from your Microwave oven or computer screen. There are countless more cancer causing elements in your cosmetics, household cleansers, car interiors, food containers, home carpets, flooring, furniture, etc... maybe we should all be living in tents... oh wait - they also contain suspected cancer causing agents. I have used Bio oil for post surgery (as recommended by my physician) and other scars and I continue to use to this day. The bottom line for me - it works and works well.
Folks, don't stop reading at just one blog. Here's a little more info on BHT and BHA and keep in mind that the lower on the ingredient list the item is, the less the product in question contains. If you are that worried about it you may want to toss out the groceries you just bought too.
Here's another link you may find of interest:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butylated_hydroxytolu
Perhaps a better title for this blog would have been
"THE WRITERS truth about Bio Oil" rather than "THE TRUTH.."
Truth is subjective to the person who perceives, experiences or believes it.
Thanks for your comment Arron! Given the choice between Bio Oil which contains toxic ingredients and other pure, safe and beneficial products that are toxin free and work much more effectively than Bio Oil, the choice is clear.
By the way, these truths are not my truths. Anyone who wants to learn about the toxicity of these ingredients can go to the authority on the subject, Safe cosmetics.org and do an ingredients search.
Hi steve, thanks for the reseach. I had an accident four years ago and it left a deep and rough scar near my nose. Pls what can I use to remove the red colour of the scar cos I just started using Bio-Oil for three days now. Need your help pls...
Thanks for your comment Max!
I wasn't aware that I failed to add a link at the end of this article for help for individuals such as yourself. I have added the link. Please click on it and fill out the form provided. Thanks
hi, is it safe to use on 9months baby?
my niece had a terrible chicken pox and scars are everywhere all over her body.
Thanks for your comment reen! Like I said in the article BIo Oil contains ingredients that are not good for the skin. So the answer would be no.
1. Mineral Oil
Mineral oil is a clear liquid by-product of distillation of petroleum from crude oil.
The INCI name is paraffinium Liquidium
Mineral oil exists in a number of different purities. High purity grades are used in cosmetics and drugs, and lower purity grades are used in mechanical or electrical processes in industry.
Bio-Oil uses pharmaceutical grade mineral oil which is the highest grade available. This complies with the British, European and United States Pharmacopoeias.
a.The benefits of mineral oil to the skin
Mineral oil works both as an emollient, which keeps the skin soft and smooth, and as a mosituriser, which prevents the formation of dry skin.
It functions by leaving a protective layer on the skin, which helps to increase moisture levels by reducing transepidermal water loss (the rate at which vapour is naturally lost through the skin’s surface).
Bio-Oil can be and is safe to use on children, although there is a small element of rose oil fragrance so it's said to use on children over the age of 2.
Thanks for your comment Emily!
You left out the most important point about mineral oil. It clogs pours preventing nutrient absorption and detoxification of the skin. The result is premature aging.
Bio-Oil contains vitamin A & E, both vitamins are associated with anti-aging properties.
Bio-Oil contains PurCellin Oil, a patented combination of ingredients that pull the essential oils (Calendula, Chamomile, Lavendar & Rosemary) & vitamins in to the 2nd layer of the skin, the dermis.
You are making some very strong claims on this blog. If people want advice in relation to how or whether to use Bio-Oil I would direct them to their doctor or pharmacist who will be aware of the brand and advise accordingly.
Thanks for your comment Emily!
I suggest you read the article again carefully.
Bio oil contains mineral oil. Mineral oil has been proven to prevent the absorption of nutrients. Therefore the nutrients you are talking about never get absorbed. John Hopkins university has done extensive studies on mineral oil and found that it causes premature aging and to be very damaging to the skin.
The PurCellin oil aids the absorbtion of the nutrients. There are clinical trials to support all the claims made by Bio-Oil.
Mineral oil is a petroleum derived oil which enjoys extensive use in both cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. It has a long history of excellent safety records in comparison to other oils.
What you have written above are opinions. I would advise anyone who wants objective advice on Bio-Oil to speak with their pharmacist or GP.
This is far from the truth about Bio-Oil.Yes Bio-OIl contains minreral oil but it has impacted many people in a positive manner, you only need to read the customer testimonials to see this -
Emily, there is no clinical proof that the mineral oil in Bio oil aids in the absorption of nutrients and that is why you have not provided any. Mineral oil also prevents detoxification and according to John Hopkins University is the next most damaging thing you can do to your skin next to overexposure to the sun. Seriously, who in their right mind would want to put refined gasoline on their face?
A study reported in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (2005) found that the type of highly refined and purified mineral oil found in cosmetic and skincare products is noncomedogenic (does not cause acne
I've used Bio Oil and seen great results.
Everything we use these days has a bunch of people saying it's bad for you. Whether it's sugar or olive oil, there is always a group of people who are against it. I wish them well with that, Bio Oil's worked well for me and my skin is better than it was before I used it so I will continue to use it.
I recently bought bio oil..was told that its very gud coz its natural and thats wat im luking for..its not necessarily bad for the skin..i just think that it depends on the skin type..it may work for one and it may not for the other..i just think that the person who posted this article is destroying the produscts name ans affecting its sales...really think about it guys!!Coca cola is harmful but its still consumed!
Hi Steve,
I just started using Bio-oil for the scars in my body. Can u suggest me an alternative for Bio oil, which wont have any side effects.
Thanks,
Sam
bio oil has been a god send for my problem uneven skin. I find it hard to believe it could be bad
One man's meat is another man's poison. I started using bio-oil a few weeks ago and the result is simply amazing. I have never seen anything so good on my skin till now. I react to practically everything including salicylic acid(which gives me a migraine). Before drawing conclusions on any product, find out what your doctor has to say about it.
I have been using Bio-oil for about a week now for post-baby stretch marks and older stretch marks on my hips. Amazingly, these marks are already starting to blend in!! I plan on using Bio-oil for a least the recommened 3 months. I'd say if you're concerned about safety, speak with your doctor. I have sensitive skin, so I will not be using on my face.
Great article thanks!! There are so many articles which recommend products that damage the skin !! I read before that glycolique acid was good for peelings and bought Eau thermale Avene treatment for acne prone skin. I put a tiny bit in my face to check and now have eczema in that part. Is there something you recomend for eczema ?
Great article! I almost bought this today for my daughter (pregnant), but at the last minute my husband asked me if I had researched it yet. Glad I didn't buy it for her! Nice to see something you wrote 2 years ago is still helping people today :)
Bio Oil is recommended for pregnant women so I very much doubt it is in any way harmful. I have only started using it and I think will continue doing so. However, I must say it doesnt sink into your skin easily, sits on it like all other oils despite the claims of it being 'dry' oil.
I have used 2 bottles of bio oil on my acne scarred skin and it has been amazingly good for my skin, I have cleared up completely and my scarring is definitely improved. I ran out 3 weeks ago and couldn't buy any more for about 6 days and my skin suffered as a result. It is non pore blocking and I would recommend it to anyone who needs a bit of help controlling the leftovers of acne in their 20s...!
I purchased bio oil because everyone was raving about it. Used it for two weeks and noticed I was getting blackheads to my face then my face started burning. My nose actually turned purple! I have never reacted to a product this way.I should have done more research before buying this product!
Bio Oil contains a declaration of non containing preservatives. Yet, there is BHT inside whish is a synthetic preservative. I am not likely to have trust in products that have false declaration. I bought the oil myself, it also very high in fragrance, that is why it can not be good for sensitive skin. So am probably going to try just with natural cold pressed olive oil instead.
I have been using bio-oil for two years on my stretch marks but no improvement. All my sisters use boi-oil and we alway recommend for friends to use some but I never know it can be that bad,can u pls tell me what to use for the stretch marks.
Anita, there is a product that gives amazing results called RE9 Advanced firming body cream. There is only one left at Amazon so you will need to act quickly. I have added the link above.
Good read, but I have to say it works for me. I used it whilst I was pregnant against stretch marks and yes, it worked. I use it after shaving my legs to keep them smooth and soft and also when my face is feeling dry. I´ve had no problems with the product and would recommend it to friends.
Steve thanks for your infor..if i may ask are you make an advert for RE9....because people re going crazy about Bio oil...it works and what the price is so good..am a studen and i dont think that everyone can afford to buy RE9 for 68$ ..and how long do u have to use this stuff before u see results,..or doest it work over night?just been curious...
Excellent article, a lot of useful information.
You can't say greasy food, caffeine and chocolate don't cause acne. They have not been proven to cause acne (which could mean they don't or that they just don't have enough evidence or inadequate testing methods). On the contrary there are lots of anecdotal evidence of this causal relationship. I always feel a reaction under my skin when I eat these foods and see breakouts automatically. Caffeine is the worst for me. So does that mean that in my case these foods don't cause me acne, but I must be allergic to greasy foods, chocolate and caffeine?? I'm not allergic to anything such as dairy, nuts etc.
Bio Oil Contains Vitamin A which is not safe during pregnancy and the promote it customers without telling them this. True snake oil salesmen. Biol is snake oil.
Emu oil ( Dromais Novae-Hollandiae large flightless Australian bird from which thorasic fat is rendered into oil. Originally discovered by Aboriginal Australians as a medicament for skin rejuvenation and inflammatory pain management) is comprised of, primarily monounsaturated blend of omega 3,6&9 essential fatty acids found to be similar in profile to healthy human skin oil ("Fatty Acid Analysis of Emu Oil, Auburn University Highlights of Agricultural Research )
This oil is non pore clogging when applied in appropriate quantities ( a few drops go a long way) is an excellent moisturizer because of the nutritional support and the ability to transdermally penetrate through upper layers of skin. Dr. Michael Holick, of Boston University Medical Center was one of the first researchers to confirm emu oil benefits in dermatology. Dr. Holick holds an international patent for the use of emu oil for treating wrinkles, rejuvenating aged and photodamaged skin, as well as, for treating disorders involving hair loss.r
Dr. John Griswald of the Harner Burn Center in Lubbock, Texas was involved in a human burn victim trial that found emu oil treated patients experienced increased comfort and decreased scarring.
For those seeking a rpetroleum and chemical free alternative to nutritionally support skin health, emu oil is truly "survival gear for skin" (R).
Reputable emu oil companies do not adulterate their products with cheap mineral oil fillers to reduce cost. This oil is stabile without need of chemical preservatives for 6-12 months.
How about using vaseline or 50 50 cream which is paraffin. Is that good for the skin
Hi Steve,
Thanks for the article.
I was reading through the comment section, however, and came across Emily's argument a few months back.
Disregarding the possibility that she might be a personnel from Bio-Oil, your replies to her argument for Bio-oil triggered a question for me.
You have mentioned the John's Hopkins University's claim regarding the mineral oil.
Do you mind citing that article from JHU? In another article that you have written on Mineral Oil's dangers, you mention that you found this fact in another online article. A quick google search led me to other articles as well, stating the exact same thing, but I could not find anything from John's Hopkins University.
Have you conducted scientific literature research during the process of writing this article? Or have you simply put together various unproven claims for the sake of grabbing people's attention? After all, Hubpage's monetary incentives do cause overjustfication effect.
I am not trying to attack your article in any way; for what it's worth, dangers of impure mineral oil are definitely present. As stated on http://hsis.ascc.gov.au/DocumentationES.aspx?ID=45 ,
"Prolonged contact with mineral oil has the associated risk of developing skin conditions such as oil folliculitis, eczematous dermatitis, melanosis ofthe face and plantar warts"
(Sources: Rivoire J et al, "Skin diseases produced by cutting oils", Revue Lyonnaise Medicine, 11-13, 1970
NIOSH, Research Triangle Institute, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1976.)
However, they also claim that "with highly refined mineral oil, no appreciable systemic toxic effects through skin absorption were noted"
(Source: Beck LS et al, "The acute toxicology of selected petroleum hydrocarbons", Proceedings of the Symposium on Toxicology of Petroleum Hydrocarbons, May, American Petroleum Institute, Washington DC, 1-12,1982.)
I am not affiliated with Bio Oil in any way, except for the fact that I do occasionally use it. This, however, doesn't make me biased toward your article, since I am trying to do research regarding the effects of the ingredients of Bio Oil myself.
Your article was a good start in my investigation, so thank you for that :)
Unfortunately, I wish you would have had included citations.
-Chris :D
Chris, it does sound like you are defending Bio Oil. Claiming that impure mineral oil is hazardous but refined mineral oil used in Bio oil is harmless. The EWG says there is toxicity with refined mineral oils found in cosmetics. Many references are included.:
I'm a firm believer in using natural product. I'm 8 months pregnant and in my 7th month I developed stretch marks that I'm not happy about. I used raw Sharayah butter and was recommended Bio oil. Only been using for a week but now I'm scared. My elders say use olive oil. What do u recommend to prevent and remove my stretch marks
Typo(shea butter)
Thanks for your comment jane'e!
There have been powerful testimonies about the effectiveness of RE9 Advanced Firming Body Cream. I have included before and after pictures at the end of this article above as well as Amazon links for your consideration.
Thanks for responding Steve. I will check into it
My skin seems to love it, so I'll keep using it.
Hi Steve
I understand your view regarding Bio Oil. But are you sure you are not perhaps promoting your RE9 Advance product by putting Bio Oil down.
something that is difficult in the trust. I use bio oil is mixed together Handbody Nivea for my whole body. and I find traces of some of the color of my skin is not balanced now increasingly showing the results I want. just a week I use this product. and still kept 2 bottles of 200 ml size of 3 bottles that I bought last week. but now what do I do with the rest of the bio-oil to another? while I like to use a mixture of oil and Handbody. how the natural caring oil products from eucherin ?
I ve suffered from acne for over 15 years.I ve browsed the internet extensively and when a product is reviewed, I have come across some comments which are positive and some negitive- different experiences but on this site the only comments seem to agree that it is as your article says....very odd indeed.
Thanks for your comment Rafick! You may want to read the comments again. There are several that do not agree with this article although most do.
I think the one who sounds the most convincing is Chris. Sure, Bio oil is more or less harmful, or beneficial, but don't we all drink or eat preservatives in this day and age?
I actually have fairly decent skin, and I bought the product just a week and a half ago. I've only used it four times and I already see fantastic results.
If it may cause premature aging in some way, use sunscreen (which a lot of people who do care for their skin know it's the number one aging factor). And no breakouts as well for my face.
Seriously, there is so much more harmful products out there, even that expense RE9 you've mentioned. I would never trust an expensive product like that who claims to cure your face or body relatively. Why would it be so expense if there weren't *harm or non-harmful ingredients in there?
And right now, I'm eating a microwaved cooked meal. Hmmm. What kind of harmful products lurk in there?
Ahem (I'm not a doctor, just a student). My advice, if you want to use it. Don't use it as often, oh because of the bad mineral oil.
I recently got this product and apparently my research was insufficient because I didn't come across this article. First of all, my interest in this product was a result of wanting to get rid of my acne scars. I have scars all over my face; it's everywhere! But I was also on the cautionary side because quick-fix products with fantastical claims always have some hidden harmful secret. And honestly, there are so many products out there that contain unknown side effects in the long term (meaning decades). Ingredients in cosmetics are suggested to be carcinogenic (can be found in The Secret History of The War in Cancer by Devra Davis) but effects and symptoms aren't revealed until many many years have passed. Unless a product is found to be immediately life threatening in the testing process, it will still go out into the markets making the human population an experiment!
Most likely, I'll discontinue my use of this product knowing its risks, but honestly after my school research into food and agriculture (GMOs etc.) and reading that book about cancer historically, you can't trust ANYTHING anymore T.T and that is depressing.
By the way, I also think you should have included proper citations, not only does it make your (anti)claim more legitimate and reliable but it allows nerds like me to learn more about this topic from the sources you cite.
And to be honest, Chris, your cited sources are kinda outdated which to an extent of which you are probably aware make them less reliable.
So I've used this product about 3-4 times and I haven't seen any results (probably cus my skin is so bad). I haven't had breakouts and it's not too greasy.
I'd also like to see the citation for the Johns Hopkins study about the adverse effects of mineral oil on human skin.
I used Bio oil during my prgnancy and it did more dammage to my skin and after awhile i have discovered a new tissue oil- busby liquid gold tissue oil and boy does the oil work, now that should be called a miracle oil,and its all natural.
I started using Bio Oil recently for my acne scars. I haven't noticed any breakouts because of it, but if I do, I'll stop using it. So far though, I haven't noticed anything unusual.
Whether or not Bio Oil works for you depends entirely on your skin type. Same goes for any cosmetic/beauty products. Chris, you mentioned that Salicylic acid is the way to go, but one of my cousins used a product that had that ingredient in it, and she reacted badly to it. So really, that ingredient might not work for everyone either. Everyone is different.
I meant to redirect my comment to Steve, not Chris, lol. :S Sorry about that!
Best regards! The last two days I was thinking that I buy BIO-OIL and now I read this article and do not really know what to think. Perhaps this article is only marketing move? I wish the answer from someone who has damage from oil? I would be grateful to him. Greetings from Croatian, Sorry about the bad english: (
My issue with this hub is that you're saying that acne is an allergic reaction. It most definitely is not. There is a distinct difference between acne, a skin condition highly dependent on hormonal balance and genetics, and hives, an allergic reaction. Site my source? Sure, the advice of 2 MD's and:
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/acne/DS00169/DSEC
http://www.niams.nih.gov/Health_Info/Acne/acne_ff.
Now site yours.
Sarah, I disagree with you. There are many health experts who believe that food allergies can lead to acne. Google allergies and acne and you will find many credible sources.
I used bio oil after surgery and started having problems with depression and fatigue I had a blood test and found my platelets were very low, I saw a hematologist and stopped using bio oil now for 3 months and platelets are back up in normal range the hematologist agreed bio oil was the culprit it has an ingredient cumerin which acts as a blood thinner and affected my platelet production this is a horrible toxic product I'm so pleased I stopped using it before I had more serious health issues and they encourage pregnant women to use this how is this affecting a healthy pregnancy and more importantly how is it affecting your baby!
Am so confuse, l just bought one yesterday now l don't know what 2 believe. I ve a friend dat uses bio oil for the pass years now and she's never complain, could it be her skin texture?
Thank you for the article, Steve. I have heard many good reviews, in fact ONLY good reviews about Bio Oil. Just for the record, I am not a Bio Oil user. My sister swears by it and so does my personal trainer, to the point that they will not consider any other recommendations! So far there are only 2 links in the web that I have come across that counters these positive reviews; the other being blog.healthy.co.nz/why-i-dont-stock-bio-oil. I am cautious about what I ingest or apply. We have to wise up to the fact that there ARE fraudulent claims about certain products in the market, all of which are commercially and profit driven, and there will always be conflicting opinions even if the product is 1000% natural and organic. It works for some, it doesn't for others. Bottom line is to know what the ingredients are, the source, how they are derived and incorporated into the product. Then you make the decision to use or not to use.

Wow! I have been using BioOil for a whole container...just about to buy a second! Thanks, Thanks, Thanks for doing the research or just knowing enough to recognize that its ingredients NOT GOOD! Great Hub!
